Honoring Faye D’Opal: A Lasting Legacy of Justice, Activism, and Compassion
Faye D’Opal embodied a lifelong commitment to social justice, peace, and community. Deeply compassionate, steadfast, and action oriented, Faye brought together her legal expertise and her extensive community experience in the United States and Central and South America in service of survivors of violence and impoverished and marginalized communities.
In the early 1990s, when the organization was known as Marin Abused Women’s Services, Faye joined the board of what is now Center for Domestic Peace (C4DP). She served two terms as board chair, helping to guide the organization through a critical period of growth and institutional strengthening. During her tenure, she played a key role in developing a comprehensive governance charter—one that remains in use today and has served as a model for other nonprofit organizations.
One of Faye’s most enduring contributions was her leadership in helping secure a new site for the C4DP’s emergency, confidential shelter for survivors of domestic violence in 1990. C4DP had long outgrown its shelter facility which lacked adequate beds and play space for the children. It was C4DP’s vision to re-locate to a peaceful, secluded, and enclosed space with a large area for children to play-at-large.
When nearby residents initially opposed the shelter purchase in their community, Faye responded with patience and respect for community concerns. Drawing on her experience as a community organizer, she—alongside the organization’s executive director at the time—spent weekends going door to door, listening, answering questions, and building trust through honest dialogue. From this work emerged a “gentle person’s agreement” between the organization and residents. To this day, the shelter has maintained a peaceful presence in the community with hundreds of survivors and their children able to find the healing space and practical resources required toward rebuilding their lives.
Beyond her governance leadership, Faye devoted countless hours to providing pro bono legal assistance, including helping survivors navigate complex and often intimidating legal systems. Her work reflected a deep understanding of power, patriarchy, privilege, and the systemic barriers faced by those experiencing domestic violence.
Faye later stepped down from C4DP’s board after being appointed to the Marin Community Foundation Board of Trustees, where she represented Marin’s broader nonprofit community. In that role, she brought a deeply informed understanding of nonprofit needs and an unwavering commitment to advancing equity—particularly for communities that have been historically marginalized. She then went on to become a Marin County Superior Court judge where she was widely respected for her integrity, independence, and commitment to justice.
Tenacious and principled, Faye lived by one of her most cherished beliefs: “If you want peace, work for justice.”
Her legacy lives on through the emergency shelter she helped secure, the organization she helped strengthen, and the countless lives in Marin County and beyond made safer through her vision, leadership, and ground-level activism.
For these and countless other contributions, Center for Domestic Peace remains deeply grateful to Faye and extends its heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved her.
